Teachers and Educators
Hi Educators! Thanks for visiting our site. I know that aviation, aerospace and the success of aviators like Brave Bessie can be used to teach every subject from English, History, Math, Science, Arts, Foreign Language, Economics and Leadership. When I earned my pilot's license on June 15, 1921, aviation and aerospace was still very new. Many people thought I would not be able to fly an airplane simply because my skin was brown and I was a woman. But getting mad is not the answer - I got even! I was determined to show them that I could fly an airplane. I had to save my money. I had to learn French and travel to France to take flying lessons. When I returned to America, I armed myself with educational materials and went into schools and encouraged youth to look into the sky for opportunity. Today there are so many careers in aerospace. One can design airplanes or fix them when they break - or be an air traffic controller, a meteorologist, an aviation lawyer, or an astronaut. Your students may want to sell airplanes or finance them. There are many books, plays and films yet to be created about flying. Below are some websites and resources to assist you in the classroom as you encourage our youth to see that "It is a good day to fly"! Yours truly, Bessie Coleman
